This empirical study takes a cognitive perspective and examines the translation of metaphors in speeches by Chinese President Xi Jinping as collected first volume book The Governance China published 2014. draws upon Lakoff Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory Newmark's categories procedure for metaphors. researchers' data analysis has shown that (1) four out eight existing procedures are employed translating Xi's metaphors, (2) while use one reflects similar mapping conditions between source target culture, other does not always correlate with similarities or differences mappings two cultures question. research raises new inquiries regarding translation, researchers accordingly discuss implications their findings pedagogy future studies.
